Vanessa Kwaitkowski and Mat Lumalasi are the founders of a unique project that aims to bring bees back to our cities. Concerned by a growing sense of disconnect between food production and consumption and inspired by hundred year old practices in Europe, Vanessa and Mat have created something uniquely Melbourne in their project ‘Melbourne City Rooftop Honey’.

This project not only seeks to address issues of sustainability, it also aims to raise awareness of the importance of bees whilst creating delicious honey. By placing hives on the roof spaces of cafés, restaurants, hotels and individual’s gardens in and around Melbourne Vanessa and Mat have reduced the distance from production to plate to mere metres.

Mat and Vanessa both have IT and Project Management backgrounds, they perhaps would not be considered your ‘usual suspects’ though with a love of all things nature, what once was a extension of vegetable gardening has now become a full time passion for them. The Hive Melbourne Team

*PLEASE NOTE THE NEW START TIMES THIS YEAR – 6pm*

After taste, distribution has proved the key ingredient for Emma & Tom’s, which sells cold-filled, whole-fruit juice smoot

hies and vitamin-enhanced waters. The seven year old business wanted to differentiate itself in the intensely competitive and crowded juice market.
After lengthy stints overseas in the corporate sector, Tom Griffith and Emma Welsh had decided that it was time to establish their own business. Griffith came up with the concept after a ski holiday in North America on his return from London where he saw fridges full of natural whole-fruit smoothies. Unlike fruit juice made from concentrates, smoothies are the whole fruit crushed up. Griffith knew that there was nothing like that in Australia so he phoned childhood friend Emma Welsh (who was heading up the marketing division at National Australia Bank at the time) to ask if she wanted to start making fruit juice with him.

While they established the business in 2003, Welsh says that it took a year rather than three months to get the product to market. Their initial market research consisted of checking out cafes and delicatessens to see what juices they carried. The number of retail outlets is close to 3000 nationally. About two years ago, the number was about 1500 and turnover was $3.5 million. This financial year, Griffith is forecasting revenue of about $5 million, more than 95 per cent from chilled super premium fruit. And the business which has self-funded its growth is now profitable.

Although it is headquartered in Victoria and has no manufacturing assets, the business employs about 20 sales staff compared with five last year.

For both Griffith, who started his career as a chartered accountant,
and Welsh, an agricultural scientist by training, establishing a juice mar-keting business might appear to be a radical departure from their chosen path. Griffith’s previous career has in-cluded roles as an investment banker, a manager in the corporate advisory division of a Big Four accounting firm, a consultant to the UN Security Council on Iraq’s reparations from the first Gulf War, and chief financial officer for a London-based online media start-up that folded when the dotcom boom burst.
Welsh’s career includes time as a commodity trader, a commercial manager with Uncle Ben’s (Mars Corp) and a consultant with LEK. Like Griffith, she was involved with an online venture in London before returning to Australia as the head of consumer marketing at NAB between 2001 and 2003.
After working for other people, Griffith decided the time had come for him to consider establishing his own business, a goal he had often discussed with Welsh. “Emma and I always discussed this,” he says. “We wanted a challenge and the autonomy of doing our own thing.”
Come along to hear how Tom and Emma deal with planning and running a business whilst dealing with unforeseen obstacles which have been thrown their way.

A peer to peer rental website where people can rent items to and from each other. Being the first website of it’s type Steve gained alot of coverage quickly after the launch. With zero tech skills Steve managed to bootstrap the business with a tiny budget, learn on the job and used his marketing skills to get free prime time features in TV shows like A Current Affair.
Steve is the anti-geek and he says most of his on line success has resulted from what he does off line, busting the myth that we need to be stroking at a keyboard 24 hours a day.

Tony Wheeler was born in England in 1946 but spent most of his younger years overseas. Those years included a lengthy spell in Pakistan, a shorter period in the West Indies and all of his high school years in the USA. He returned to England to do an engineering degree, worked for a short time as an automotive engineer, then went back to university and completed an MBA.

As soon as Tony left business school in London in 1972, he and his wife Maureen set off for an overland trip to Asia. Their intention was to be away for about a year, get travel out of their systems and then settle down. When they arrived in Australia with 27 cents and a camera (which they soon pawned) between them, the continual questioning from people they met – How did you travel? What did you see? What did it cost? – inspired them to turn their diaries into a book. They called it Across Asia on the Cheap.

The first print run was 1500 copies, hand collated, hand trimmed and hand stapled. Tony and Maureen took the book around to bookshops in Sydney and it sold out in the first week. Eighteen months in Southeast Asia resulted in their second guide, South-East Asia on a shoestring, which they put together in a backstreet Chinese hotel in Singapore in 1975. The ‘yellow bible’, as it became known because of its distinctive yellow cover, soon became the guide to the region. It has sold well over half a million copies worldwide and is now in its 13th edition, still retaining its familiar yellow cover.

Today there are over 500 Lonely Planet titles, each one with a ‘between-the-lines message that travellers should respect the planet they wander’ (San Francisco Examiner), and an adventurous, independent approach to travel. In addition to practical travel information each guide contains concise background information on the culture and history of the countries covered in the books.

Tony believes that travellers enjoy themselves much more when they know more about the places they’re visiting. He says that travel writing is ‘dawn to dusk hard work, always on the move, always checking things’, but he and Maureen manage to fit in several trips each year. Tony continues to play an active part in researching, writing and updating Lonely Planet guides.

Want to find the cheapest flight from Melbourne to Sydney on an evening next?
How about escaping from Melbourne to “anywhere” in October for under $150?
Or where can I go overseas for $500?
If I take some time off in late January can I get to Thailand for under $420?
Or maybe you just want to find the cheapest fairs to a nice beach?

Tom Howard and Fenn Bailey met as colleagues in the helpdesk at the pioneering Australian ISP OzEmail in 1999. A common bond was formed over their interest in internet piracy, outlandish business ideas and the Hurstbridge train line. They launched their first startup together in 2002, a billing system for ISP’s called “Hostexchange”, leaving the safe confines of full time work in 2003.
The business soon diversified into website development for a range of businesses from rock festivals to motorsport tracks and Christian TV evangelists.
In late 2006 Tom and Fenn took a trip to Thailand just as the age of discount airline price-wars was gathering pace. The experience opened their eyes to the inadequacies and opportunities in flight search for budget travel. Tom was yet to be sold on the concept but Fenn took it upon himself to build a working prototype for a new style of flexible flight search engine in his spare time through 2007.
In January 2008 Adioso was launched from an internet cafe in Hanoi, Vietnam, quickly establishing a loyal following of backpacking enthusiasts and grey nomads, and building just enough traction to make the idea worth pursuing seriously.
Cut to earlier this year where after being accepted to a startup funding & mentoring program in Mountain View, California, Tom and Fenn moved the USA for three months to work on Adioso full time. At the end of the program in March they presented the second beta version to a room full of leading Silicon Valley identities, quickly securing a further round of seed funding from a range of prominent angel investors.
Now back in Melbourne they continue to develop the site and prepare for a full public launch and a return to Silicon Valley later in the year.

How do you re-route landfill destined industrial waste into design stores?
How can a business go from being in dire financial straits with the owner taking a night job delivering donuts at 3am & sleeping on the floor of the factory, to winning City of Melbourne Business of the Year in 2008?
Is manufacturing in Australia a romantic fiction novel or scaleable reality ?
How being green is no longer enough.
And why every entrepreneur should get a dog.

Originally named Urban Boomerang, the business started in a garage as a hobby in Tasmania selling a single product from a card table at Salamanca market. The business re-branded as haul in 2004 and now has retail outlets in two states, an online store with 5000 unique products and wholesales to design stores locally and afar.
In 2007 haul began making products for companies from their used advertising campaign vinyls. Corporate gifts ‘embedded with their brand’. Clients include SEEK, BP, Jetstar, AGL & Virgin Mobile. In August haul will spin off the corporate gift arm as a new business called RIVETING, which will also offer creative services & logistics for clients. It is the only company of it’s type in Australia to be Good Environmental Choice Certified.
Later in 2009 the company will open a new store – TOWNhaul in Melbourne’s laneway precincts. In 2008 haul kept 35 tonne of billboards, rubber and number plates from landfill. This year the projection is 51 tonne. In a past life Scott was a bouncer, personal trainer & ran a chain of bars in the USA. Having been lured into an entrepreneurial life he is now unemployable. Scott is @ScottKilmartin & the brand is @haul on twitter.

Tom Howard and Fenn Bailey are the entrepreneurs behind Adioso.com, the world’s only fully-flexible, natural language flight search tool, making it simple for travellers to find cheap flights and cool destinations. With the backing of some of Silicon Valley’s finest they are determined to make Adioso the world’s leading flight search and destination info site for backpackers and casual travellers.

You can follow the exploits of Tom and Fenn in building Adioso here and book that next holiday now.

How do you go about building a cool consumer brand?
How does it feel to have only 10 days worth of cash left in the bank and lots of bills to pay?
Is it better to have smart investors, dumb investors or no investors?
What do you do when you realize that your business model and strategic plan are stuffed?

Sahil Merchant has perspectives and experiences around all of these questions, and more. While he is likely to be wrong about many things – which is why he is more broke than you could ever hope to be – he is happy to share his experiences of starting and building his company, Mag Nation. Inspired, he and his business partner Paul Chiodo launched Moonlight Cinema in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens in 1996.

The following year they expanded to Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane. “The Moonlight audience is 18-35, tertiary-educated, a sophisticated urban audience,” says Tutton. Moonlight Cinema eventually sold to ASX-listed group Becker Entertainment in 2004 in a deal said to be worth about $8.3 million.

More recently James is turning his hand to property development with boutique property developer Neometro, who are best-known for the Luxe building on Inkerman Street in St Kilda, which won the Royal Australian Institute of Architects national award for commercial architecture in 2000.

The very first Hive event for 2008 took place on the 5th February. Awesome way to kick off ’08! The Order of Melbourne, located at 401 Swanston Street, was kind enough to put us up for the night. Cracking location! Nestled in the heart of the CBD we could not have picked a better scene. The Rooftop Terrace was absolutely perfect! Nice work getting up all those stairs folks. And a massive thank-you goes out to all the staff there!

Hats off to all of you who made the effort to join us! And those of you missed out, make sure you’re there in March. Because it was well worth the effort! James Masini the exceptionally talented entrepreneur behind Hippo Jobs was our first special guest of 2008. And he set the standard extremely high. James spoke about the challenges he has faced as one of Melbourne most successful, up and coming entrepreneurs, the highs and lows of running his own business and being the face of Hippo Jobs.
